This incredible place is located in the Andes of Peru, in the Cusco region and in the province of Canas, at (4790m / 15715ft) meters above sea level, in an area belonging to the Layo district this beautiful mountain is more known as’ Pallay Punchu of Apu Tacllo.

Pallay Puchu means (Andean fabric of a poncho) that is why it is named for its geographical formation very much to the Andean fabric called (Andean poncho) that protects from the cold.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 Pallay Punchu Trek Full Day

This adventure begins in the city of Cusco at your hotel. Our specialized adventure and hiking guide will come to pick you up from your hotel along with our private bus at 4:00 a.m. Then we will travel to the south of Cusco. A trip that will last 3½ hours to the province of Sicuani, here we will have breakfast for, after breakfast we will continue our trip for 1 more hour to the Layo district, here our bus trip ends. From here we will continue walking to the Pallay Punchu mountain of Apu Tacllo, a distance of 5 kilometers long that requires approximately 1½ hours of walking. We will reach a height of (4790 masl / 15715 ft) where we will have the complete view of the wonderful Pallay Punchu of Apu Tacllo.

After having finished exploring this beautiful place we will return to our bus slowly, taking the last photos, then on our bus we will go to the Province of Sicuani to have a delicious buffet lunch. After finishing lunch we will return to Cusco and this adventure will end at your hotel with unique memories that you will never forget this experience in the Peruvian Andes.

What is Pallay Punchu Trek del Apu T’acllo and where is it located?

Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca is located in Peru, in the Cusco region, province of Sicuani in the village of Layo. This mountain is a natural formation that shows the whim of nature through kilometers of land that are changing their coloring by the richness in minerals and it is from the viewpoint of Pallay Punchu, from where you will have a spectacular view of the entire Cordillera of the Andes with its whimsical colors that resemble the Rainbow Mountains.

The point of maximum height is 4790 meters above sea level; however the tour part of the city of Cusco, passing through towns like Layo and Sicuani until you get to the start point of the walk called more lakes to 4500 meters above sea level, from where we will ascend to the observation deck at a height of 5000 meters above sea level.

The Mountain Rainbow is located 162 km from the city of Cusco and takes about 10 hours to get to this place between the trip by car and on foot without counting the stops to feed and rest.

Who can be done? Are there horses Pallay Punchu?

The degree of difficulty of this route is intermediate – easy, so it is recommended for people with an optimal physical state, as the advancement could be a little tiring for people who are not accustomed to these walks in height. However you can rent a horse in the same locality of Layo with the Communards who offer this service just for people who cannot walk or not willing to walk for three hours. You must bear in mind that the horse is guided by a horseman and will leave about 15 minutes from the viewpoint of Pallay Punchu so if you or if you will have to walk this stretch.

What months of the year and time are best for a visit Pallay Punchu Trek?

The tour departs every day of the year, being the dry season the most recommended between the months of April to November however the rest of months even with the presence of rain and hail (sometimes) offers us a view that can only be seen with this climate that you can cope with a rain poncho and good trekking shoes.

You can't miss the 4 day Inca Jungle tour!

On the recommendation of a friend we did the 4 day Inca Jungle tour with Terra Qechua Peru and it was a memorable experience. The trip started with a thrilling downhill bike ride and we did other activities such as rafting and zip lining, which added an extra adrenaline rush, followed by a hike through the rainforest full of fascinating flora and fauna, guided by a very knowledgeable expert. In addition, the natural hot springs in Santa Teresa were the perfect relaxation after active days. The final visit to Machu Picchu was the finishing touch, offering breathtaking views and a total immersion in Inca history.

The Inca Jungle is highly recommended

With my university classmates we did the 4-day Inca Jungle with Terra Quechua Peru and it was a great experience. We did a lot of adventure sports and the safety measures for the zip line, rafting and cycling were top notch. It was more fun than the Salkantay and much cheaper than the official Inca Trail. In general the whole experience is excellent, it has no waste, adventure tourism at its best, warmth of all the people who attended us and excellent guide, very professional, he answered all the questions we had and gave us a history lesson, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
